Race for .co.za domains

Posted by Josh on June 27th, 2008

Finding the perfect domain name for your new website is generally very difficult, especially if you’re trying to get a .com, .net or .org. Getting a ‘.co.za’ has been quite a lot easier though those are slowly running out too. It might be worth taking a look through all the available domain names. I did a search for two letter domains, three letter dictionary words, four or five letters repeated, duplicate letters separated by a number and common words. Click through to view all the domains the co.za nameservers don’t serve (either non-existant, suspended or restricted).

$100 free Facebook advertising coupon

Posted by Josh on June 24th, 2008

I regularly keep watch on a couple of blogs (mainly TechCrunch and Mashable) , and today it paid off again (atleast a little).

Visa has launched a directory on Facebook for small businesses (Mashable post here), and are giving away $100 (hey, thats about how much a Shift package with us for a year costs) to the first 20,000 companies to sign up. You can reach the signup form at: http://apps.facebook.com/visabusiness/sign_up

Besides the $100 coupon, the Visa Small Business directory also has question and answers with experts, rating systems, search for similar companies in an area, and a decent page for your business. In addition, Google is offering some business apps: maps, calendar, word processor, and a template for creating expense sheets and business cards.

Building a Control Panel from Scratch

Posted by Josh on June 18th, 2008

Lusion Technologies is currently a baby in terms of hosting company size (we only run two servers, with a little over 300 websites) even though we have been around for almost five years. Over the last few months we’ve been pushing Lusion, with some new advertising and this blog, but now we’re starting work on our largest project (especially since we’re only a two man team at the moment) — a control panel designed and built specifically for our clients.

Interactive PHP Shell (a la Python)

Posted by Josh on June 7th, 2008

Elty Developing

Choosing the right language isn’t an easy thing to do, with countless programming languages, each with distinct advantages and disadvantages – and its not really possible to know all of them. I have been swearing by PHP as my web development language but lately I’ve been tempted to try out Ruby on Rails (although an article from ‘Stuart Herbert on PHP’ changed my mind) and Python (I use it for all my small scripts – but havn’t given mod_python / Django a chance yet) has some awesome advantages such as its clean syntax and class design, but more importantly, I have fallen in love with its interactive shell.

Fighting Spam – Disposable Email Addresses

Posted by Josh on June 4th, 2008

Elty Disposed of Himself

Online services almost always require you to give them an email address to sign up. This requirement used to be useful for stopping people from signing up many times (as normally people only have one email address), while these services usually won’t send you much more than a ‘Thank you for signing up’ message; the wrong service could get your email address into a spam list (which is never a good thing – most of the time its irreversible)
